250 What is the meaning of S.A.W , R.A (Radithallah anho), R.A (Rehmatullah aleh) A.S (Aslam) and why do we use these terms for certain individuals ie : for Beloved Prophet Musa (A.S) and not say (S.A.W) and so on?
S.A.W (Sallallahu Alaihe Wasalam), literally means Allah sent Darood and Salutations upon Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihe Wasalam).

In addition to this, Allah Humah Salle alla Muhammad wasalim, literally means O Allah send Darood and Salutations upon Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihe Wasalam.

A.S (Alai his Salaam) literally means Salutations be upon him.

R.A (Radiallahu Anhu) literally means Allah is pleased with him.

R.A (Radiallahu Anha) literally means Allah is pleased with her.

R.A (Rahmatulla Alai he) literally mean Allahs mercy is upon him.

R.A (Rahmatulla Alai ha) literally mean Allahs mercy is upon her.

It is a good practice to write and renounce the complete salutations and not abbreviations.

The reason we use Sallallahu Alaihe Wasalam for Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihe Wasalam is because in a verse of the Holy Quran Allah Azawajal commands Muslims to send Darood and Salutations upon Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihe Wasalam and such command regarding other Prophets.

Therefore for Prophet Sallallahu Alaihe Wasalam we use Sallallahu Alaihe Wasalam and for respect of all other prophets we use Alai his Salaam as to distinguish the difference. Allah also in the Quran sends such salutations on other prophets Alai his Salaam.
