Ramadan 2010 (Pearls of Light)

Sayyidah Umme Salmah (R.A)

Hazrat e Sayyidah Umme Salmah (R.A) was originally called Hind, but was most famously known by the title, 'Umme Salmah' (R.A) (Mother of Salmah). All Historians have agreed that her mothers name was Aatikah bint Aamir, and her father is either 'Huzaifa' by some, while 'Suhail' by other narrators.

Hazrat e Sayyidah Umme Salmah (R.A) was first married to Hazrat Abu Salmah (R.A) (the foster brother of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W)). They both embraced Islam shortly after the proclaiming of Prophethood, and were also amongst the first people to make Hijrat (Migration) to Abbyssinia (currently known as Ethopia).

After returning to Makkah, they then intended to make Hijrat to Madina Shareef.

The Banu Mugheera (Hazrat e Sayyidah Umme Salmah (R.A)’s tribe) began to cry when seeing their daughter Hazrat e Sayyidah Umme Salmah (R.A), with her son Hazrat Salmah (R.A), on a camel being led by her husband out of the city. They said, "We'll not allow our daughter to leave Makkah", and took her off the camel by force.

Hadrat Abu Salmah (R.A) and his tribe (Banu Asad) reacted angirly and said “You people are stopping Umme Salmah (R.A) from going to Madina Shareef just because she beIongs to your tribe?

Nevertheless, Hadrat Abu Salmah (R.A)’s) intention for Hijrat was in no way changed, and leaving behind his son and wife, he thereafter migrated to Madina.

After some time the Banu Mugheera finally conceided and allowed Hazrat e Sayyidah Umme Salmah (R.A) and her son Hazrat Salmah (R.A) to migrate. Both travelled to Madina Shareef to be with Hazrat Abu Salmah (R.A)

Both husband and wife led a pleasant life in Madina until Hadrat Abu Salmah (R.A) passed away in 4 AH. The Prophet (S.A.W) then married Hazrat e Sayyidah Umme Salmah (R.A) with the sole purpose of looking after her and the children she had.

Along with being very beautiful, Hazrat e Sayyidah Umme Salmah (R.A) was also very intelligent. Beloved Prophet (S.A.W) states, "I have not seen a woman who gave an opinion that was always correct except for Umme Salmah (R.A)."

Hazrat e Sayyidah Umme Salmah (R.A) narrated approximately 380 Ahadith. The Sahabah and Taabieen such as Hazrat e Sayyidah Aisha (R.A) and Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (R.A) are amongst her students.

She passed away in 53 AH at the age of 84 and is buried with the other Azwaaje
Mutaharaat in Jannatul Baqi. Her Janazah Salah was performed by Hazrat Abu Hurairah (R.A). Some Historians are of the opinion that Hazrat e Sayyidah Umme Salmah (R.A) passed away in 59 AH whilst others say 63 AH; Ibrahim Halbi records her demise to have taken place in 62 AH. (Zarqaani, Vol. 3, Pg. 238-42).
